What is the legal age to get tattooed in South Carolina?
Under South Carolina state law, you must be at least 18 years old to receive a tattoo. There are strictly NO parental consent exceptions for tattooing minors in SC. You must present a valid, non-expired government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, or military ID) at the time of your appointment.
Do you accept walk-ins, or is Black Sparrow appointment-only?
We welcome walk-ins every single day on a first-come, first-served basis! Walk-ins are ideal for flash designs, script lettering, small to medium pieces, and body piercings. For large custom projects (such as sleeves, back pieces, or intricate cover-ups), we recommend scheduling an in-person consultation so your artist can draft a dedicated design.
Why is tattoo pricing done in person only?
Accurate tattoo pricing depends on exact physical sizing, anatomical curvature, skin condition, detail density, and color saturation. Quoting prices over phone calls or direct messages is inaccurate and leads to miscommunication. By evaluating your placement in person at our Moncks Corner studio, we give you a firm, guaranteed quote with zero surprises.
Are deposits required, and how do they work?
Yes, a non-refundable deposit is required to schedule and lock in an appointment. 100% of your deposit is credited directly towards the final cost of your tattoo. Deposits compensate the artist for the dedicated hours spent sketching and designing your custom stencil before you arrive. If you need to reschedule, we require at least 48 hours notice to transfer your deposit to a new date.
Where does getting a tattoo hurt the most and least?
Pain tolerance varies by individual. Generally, areas with thicker skin and muscle—such as the outer bicep, forearm, thigh, and calf—are the least painful (rated 2–4 out of 10). Areas close to bone, nerve clusters, and thin skin—including the ribs, sternum, spine, armpits, feet, elbows, and throat—are significantly more intense (rated 7–9 out of 10). Eating a good meal and staying hydrated dramatically reduces discomfort.
Can I use numbing cream before my tattoo session?
You must consult directly with your artist before applying any numbing cream. Over-the-counter numbing creams can alter the texture and elasticity of your skin (making it spongy or rubbery), which can cause ink rejection, patchy healing, and premature fading. If approved, we will advise on specific artist-tested medical formulations.
What should I do to prepare for my tattoo appointment?
Get a full night of sleep, drink plenty of water for several days leading up to your session, and eat a hearty meal containing carbohydrates and protein 1 to 2 hours before arriving. Wear loose, comfortable dark clothing that grants easy access to the tattoo placement area. Do not consume alcohol, aspirin, or blood thinners for 24 hours prior.
What is the appropriate tipping etiquette for tattoo artists?
Tipping is customary in the tattoo industry and deeply appreciated as a gesture of satisfaction for your artist's craftsmanship, custom illustration, and bedside care. Standard tips typically range from 15% to 25% of the total session cost, but any amount is welcomed.
Can I bring a friend or family member to my appointment?
Yes! You are welcome to bring one adult guest (18+) for moral support. To maintain a sterile environment, prevent cross-contamination, and ensure artists have adequate physical room to work, we ask that you limit guests to one person in the procedure area. Children and infants are not permitted in procedure areas.
How long after getting a tattoo can I exercise or go to the gym?
We recommend taking 48 to 72 hours off from strenuous workouts. Avoid exercises that stretch, pull, or rub against the newly tattooed area. Furthermore, public gym equipment is coated in MRSA and staph bacteria; keep your tattoo covered in clean clothing, wipe gym surfaces down, and shower immediately with antibacterial soap after light workouts.
When can I swim in Lake Moultrie, the ocean, or a swimming pool?
You must wait a minimum of 3 to 4 weeks until the tattoo has completely finished peeling and the surface skin has sealed before swimming. Submerging a fresh tattoo in standing water (hot tubs, bathtubs, pools, lakes, or the ocean) exposes raw tissue to bacteria, causing severe infections, pigment loss, and permanent scarring.
Do you offer free touch-ups on tattoos?
Yes! We take immense pride in our work. Black Sparrow Tattoo Studio provides one complimentary touch-up within 6 months of your original session, provided you followed our aftercare instructions. (Note: High-friction zones such as hands, fingers, and feet heal differently and are evaluated individually).
What kind of jewelry is used for body piercings?
We exclusively pierce with implant-grade ASTM F-136 titanium or solid nickel-free gold. Implant titanium is lightweight, hypoallergenic, bio-inert, and will never tarnish, rust, or trigger allergic contact dermatitis like cheap 'surgical steel' or mystery metals.
Can I get tattooed or pierced if I am pregnant or nursing?
No. Under medical and professional guidelines, we cannot tattoo or pierce anyone who is currently pregnant or breastfeeding. Hormonal fluctuations affect healing and pain thresholds, and in the unlikely event of an infection, medications could harm the child.
What payment methods are accepted at the studio?
We accept cash as well as all major credit and debit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express) and mobile contactless payments. Cash is always preferred by artists!
How long does a tattoo take to completely heal?
The visible surface epidermis typically heals within 2 to 3 weeks (the peeling and flaking stage). However, the deeper dermal layer beneath requires 4 to 8 weeks to fully stabilize and encapsulate ink particles. Continue applying unscented moisturizer daily.
Can you fix or cover up an old, faded, or poorly done tattoo?
Yes, our artists are cover-up and rework specialists! We evaluate your existing piece in person, determine whether laser lightening is necessary, and draft custom concepts utilizing clever pigment density and optical distraction to camouflage old ink completely.
How do I reach Black Sparrow Tattoo Studio from Summerville or Charleston?
