The Science of Tattoo Cover-Ups
Covering a tattoo is fundamentally different from working on fresh skin. You cannot simply tattoo white or flesh tone over dark pigment—tattoo ink sits inside the dermis like stained glass.
To successfully hide old ink, our artists employ three scientific principles:
Pigment Density
We match the darkness of the old tattoo with deep, rich tones (deep navy, forest green, charcoal, or solid black) while using surrounding lighter elements to balance the overall piece.
Visual Redirection
By positioning the focal point of the new design (e.g. the eye of an animal, the blade of a dagger, or a blooming petal) away from the old ink, your eye naturally ignores the concealed area.
Strategic Sizing
A successful cover-up is typically 2 to 3 times larger than the original tattoo. This provides adequate negative space around the cover area, preventing the piece from looking like a dark blob.
